UT Science Lecture

It's called "Come Ice or High Water: How Will Global Warming Affect Antarctic Ice Sheets and Sea Levels?" by Dr. David Vaughan, Glaciologist, British Antarctic Survey. Sea Base Trip Openings

All Scouts interested in attending SeaBase 2007:

Troop 399 has immediate openings during the week of June 24-30, 2007, for those Scouts and parents who'd like to participate in the Keys Adventure program, giving you a variety of activities including swimming, snorkeling, ocean-kayaking, and fishing.

*One day, you will fish offshore in a 25-foot Dusky powerboat with heavy tackle for those big ones out deep, and some lighter rods and reels for the smaller fish

*Another day will be spent exploring the backcountry waters of the Florida Bay fishing for sharks and barracuda in a 24-foot Carolina Skiff

*Your itinerary will also include a great deal of snorkeling and the opportunity to learn more about marine biology from a fish eye point-of-view

*Of course, no trip to the Keys would be complete without a trip to Key West.

Scouts who wish to attend need to be 14 years old by September 1, 2007. The cost is $620 per Scout, not including airfare.

Wilderness First Aid Confusion

An email to our volunteer and leader database has caused a lot of confusion, so please allow me to clear it up:

The message sent on Tuesday January 30 carried the subject line, "Scouts - Training Session Filled". It briefly said that the March 31-April 1 Wilderness First Aid Basics course was now filled. This note was sent because the council sent its monthly e-newsletter the day before - with a posting promoting the Wilderness First Aid Course.

The Tuesday January 30 email was sent only as a clarification to the e-newsletter promotion - and not as an indication of whether or not an individual was registered or not registered in the course. My apologies for any and all confusion related to this matter.

The theoretical reschedule date is the weekend of March 24, however we have yet to confirm this date. Volunteer Recognition Reception

The Capitol Area Council’s Volunteer Recognition Reception and Awards will take place on Friday, February 9, 2007 at 7 pm at Great Hills Baptist Church. The evening will honor the 2006 class of Eagle Scouts and Scouts who have earned national awards for bravery and lifesaving. The highlight of the night will be the presentation of honors to several outstanding volunteers. Some will receive the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award presented for outstanding service to Scouting at the council and/or district level. Others will receive the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award, an honor for individuals or organizations which provide outstanding service to low-income urban and rural youth through Scouting. Also, the council will present the William H. Spurgeon III Award to individuals or groups for outstanding service to young people through the Exploring program. Venturing Leadership Awards will be presented to leaders who have helped grow and develop the Venturing program.

New Council President

The Capitol Area Council's Executive Board has elected Winston Krause as Council President for 2007. Krause succeeds Joe Beal, who provided extraordinary leadership for the council in 2006. Krause is an Eagle Scout, with an Eagle son and another on the way. He is Managing Partner with Krause & Associates, LP, Attorneys at Law. Krause joined the Capitol Area Council’s Executive Board in 2000, and most recently served as the council’s First Vice President. During his tenure on the board, he has worked on two capital campaigns, including the current Step Up. Stand Tall. campaign. He has served as Chairman for the council’s Friends of Scouting campaign twice (while heading up Major Gifts) and Vice Chairman for the Safari Dinner and Auction. Krause also serves as an Assistant Scoutmaster and Troop Committee Member of Troop 5 in Longhorn District.

Can't decide on what your Scout may want, or what size he wears? Consider a Capitol Area Council Scout Shop gift card! This card will make your shopping easier, and lets the Scout (or dad!) pick exactly what he wants. We can even sell them over the phone and mail them to you, for a 50-cent postage and handling fee. And if the card is lost, the value can be retrieved if the receipt was saved.

Please be aware that the gift cards sold at the National BSA site are NOT valid at our shop. Our shop is wholly owned and operated by our council, not the National BSA. All the proceeds go to support our local camps and Council operations. The National BSA (ScoutStuff) cards are only valid at the National website or nationally-owned shops.

We have plans for our card to also be honored at the Lost Pines Summer Camp Trading Post in 2007.

Archery Instructor Course

A National Archery Association Level I basic instructor course will be offered in February for those who would like to obtain certification. The course will include one evening of classroom instruction and a half day at the Lost Pines Scout Reservation archery range.

The course is designed to train instructors how to conduct beginner archery programs for youth and adults and will be limited to registered Scouters. Included in the 8-hour course will be the basics of range set-up and safety, proper shooting techniques, working with beginners, proper equipment maintenance, and how to manage a short-term archery program. The certification is valid for 3 years. A written test must be passed at course's end to attain certification.

We are asking that those who take the course commit to offer at least one archery orientation class for Cub Scout leaders or work a council shooting sports event.

Classes will be held from 6-10pm Thursday, February 8 in Austin (location to be announced) and 8am-noon Saturday, February 10 at Lost Pines Scout Reservation. You must attend both days to be certified.

The cost for the course will be $30 and the class will be limited to 12 participants. If you are interested, please contact Roy Kleinsasser at rkleinsasser@austin.rr.com.

183 Construction

If you live south and normally use 183 to get to the Council Service Center and Scout Shop, then you'll probably want to use I-35 instead for the next month or so. TxDOT has closed the northbound exit from 183 to US 290 and the 183 access road between Springdale Rd and US 290 until late December, at least. In other words, you won't be able to exit off northbound 183 at 290 and then double-back to the Service Center. It looks like your best bet might be coming north on I-35 to 290, then taking the Cameron Road exit to get to the 290/183 intersection near the Service Center.

Recharters Due November 30
That’s right, Recharters are due early this year. You may complete much of the process online, starting November 1, but District Commissioner Mark Adams (contact info at top) is requiring all Scout units to submit their completed Recharter packets to their unit commissioners by November 30. Alternately, you may submit your unit’s completed packet at the popcorn money turn-in night in Smithville (see notes above). Remember, once you input updated information online, you still need to collect signed applications for youth and adults, gather enough money, and have the packet signed by the head of your unit’s chartering organization.

Please do not delay in submitting your unit’s Recharter! You may complete much of the process online, starting December 1. The final date to submit Recharters is at Cub Scout leader training on January 20 at First Lutheran Church in Gonzales. Remember, once you input updated information online, you still need to collect signed applications for youth and adults, gather enough money, and have the packet signed by the head of your unit’s chartering organization.

Remember, we invite kids to join the program year-round. Our Join Cub Scout Nights and Troop Open Houses have been a great success this year. The council provides many resources and materials for us. If you need any assistance with your year-end efforts please do not hesitate to call your District staff. We are all available to assist.

Training
It is the commitment of the District Training Committee to help provide enough training so we can have 100% trained volunteers. Trained leadership will allow the children to have more fun and will decrease the stress of planning an exciting year of activities. Please refer to the dates and locations of the upcoming trainings. There will be information available at each Roundtable about upcoming training opportunities. Remember the more training you receive as a leader, the more fun your children participating will have.

Summer and Winter Camping
The Council has mailed all Scoutmasters a Winter Camp and a Summer Camp Leaders Guide book. This Guide book is full of great information to make your Winter and Summer Camp experience at Lost Pines unforgettable. The District will be making arrangements with all troops to hold a Summer Camp presentation at the Troop meeting. Look for more details soon.

Webelos Woods
Special “Thanks” to Gary McFarland and his team for making this year’s Webelos Woods a huge success! Webelos Woods is a great time for troops to show off what they are all about and give those up-and-coming Tenderfoot Scouts and glimpse at what the troop has to offer.

Family Friends of Scouting
The District Family Friends of Scouting Chair will be contacting all the units setting up presentation dates soon. Please look at the unit calendar and find time for a presentation. Friends of Scouting is critical and enables Scouting to grow and prosper within our communities.

Ring Out
Please send your updated unit roster to Josh or Scott at the council office or forward it to jmankovs@bsamail.org or soliver@bsamail.org, so we can make sure every Scout that is participating in the program is registered. This will ensure that the Scout is covered under the Boy Scout’s insurance, and allow Scouts to earn badges and ranks.

Roundtable
District Roundtable is a monthly meeting, social gathering and sharing of information for all Scout leaders and interested parents. In Tomahawk district, Roundtable is held the second Thursday of every month. The regular meeting starts at 7:30PM and usually ends by 9:00PM. There will be a joint session for announcements, after which we will break out into separate sessions for Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing, and Order of the Arrow. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early to sign in and pick up any handouts.

“Scouts are on Target” is the theme for this year’s Webelos Woods, which will be held on November 17-19, at Webberville State Park. Training
Don’t forget! Everyone who underwent new leader essentials training – NOW is the time to complete your leader training by attending Outdoor Leader Training on November 10-12 at Lindsey Lodge at LCRA Lost Pines Scout Reservation. We’ll offer Outdoor Leadership Skills Training (Boy Scout/Webelos Leaders) for a $20 fee. In addition, BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) Training will be offered for all Cub Leaders. Don’t forget BALOO is required of at least one leader in a pack in order for that pack to camp overnight apart from a council-sponsored event. Fall Roundup Was A Great Success!
Thank you to all the units, Cub Leaders and Committee Chairs that participated in our 2006 Fall Roundup! Thank you to all of the leaders who attended Roundup meetings at the schools, giving of yourselves and your time and affording each boy at elementary schools the opportunity to join Cub Scouting. Tejas District reached more Cub Scouts by the end of September than we had reached all of last year.

District Awards

Longhorn District Roundtable
The Longhorn District Roundtable is held at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church (15th & Rio Grande). This is the one place to find all the new information as soon as it is received. Fellowship begins at 6:30 pm for those who like to visit, ask questions and share experiences in doing the job. A different topic or theme is discussed each month. This is an excellent learning opportunity for new leaders, and a great chance for experienced leaders to brush up on their scouting skills. Rechartering and “Wild Beast Feast”
Your rechartering process started in October by first submitting your unit rosters to Karryn Peters, at mk5peters@sbcglobal.net, and continues every month by units submitting new youth and adult applications when received. When your unit goes online beginning on December 4th, your roster will be up to date. You will only need to delete youth and leaders who are on longer with your unit and make any changes on addresses, positions, etc. to submit your charter! Units are encouraged to submit your charter to the council office before Christmas. Our “Wild Beast Feast” will be January 11th. If your unit has submitted your charter early, then you can enjoy the evening by eating and visiting program tables for important information.

If you need further proof that the council’s membership is growing, just drop by the Scout Shop.
Business has been brisk at the Shop, as new Scouting families are looking for uniforms, handbooks, patches and more. Scout Shop manager, Steve Hanson, has made several changes in the physical layout of the shop – with an eye on improved organization and customer service. “We have to give careful thought about how we organize the shop, because we know our customers have a lot to get done – and not much time to do it in,” says Hanson. “The more we think ahead and ‘Be Prepared’, the better experience shoppers will have.”

Another new convenience from the Shop is the order request form, found under the “Shop” link on the council’s website (or just CLICK HERE). Shoppers can fill out the form on the page and then click “send email”. 24 hours later, the Shop will have checked your email, put your order together and have it ready for you to pick up. Or, you can choose to have the Shop ship your order.

Steve and his staff continue to look for new ways to make your shopping experience better – and they greatly appreciate your generosity through the Friends of Scouting campaign, which has made many of these improvements possible. They also look forward to the new Frank Fickett Scout Training and Service Center, which will feature a Shop three times larger than the current space.

Internet Recharter puts you in control

Once again the Capitol Area Council is offering BSA National’s Internet Rechartering service. Internet Rechartering puts the power of accuracy in your hands: you make the difference when it comes to getting your unit’s information correct with the national office. You can access Internet Rechartering by going to the council’s website, www.bsacac.org, and clicking on the “Recharter” link - or just CLICK HERE.

* You can choose to start with the unit’s default information from ScoutNET, or upload information from TroopMaster or PackMaster recordkeeping software
* You need your unit’s access code to process the recharter (contact your Unit Commissioner if you don’t have the code)
* You don’t have to finish the whole job in one sitting. As long as you have your unit’s access code, you can do a little, log off and then pick it back up later
* When you’ve completed entering all the information, click “submit”

But the most important thing to remember is: YOU STILL MUST PRINT OUT THE COMPLETED FORMS AND GET THEM SIGNED. Physical requirements on
Recharter documents are still a requirement of the national office, not the council office. Please follow through on this step and your unit will not miss out on youth advancement updates or any other membership benefits.

CORRECTION: Internet Recharter

The print version of the November-December ScouTalk states that the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America will not activate its Internet Rechartering website until December 1. This is wrong.

In fact, the Internet Recharteting site will be activated as of November 1 for units rechartering in December. Units rechartering in January will have to wait until December 1 to have access to the site. We regret the mistake.

What: Boy Scout Veterinary Science Merit Badge at the 14th annual Open House

Important information concerning the Boy Scout Veterinary Science Merit Badge Program available through the Open House:

The program is open to 250 Scouts with the names of 50 alternates. Registration starts October 14 at 7am and is available online only; CLICK HERE to register.

Scout leaders and scouts who have received a confirmation email (shortly after registering) will be contacted again no later than November 26th with further information. The information will include a packet outlining the badge requirements, blue-card instructions, the mailing address to send the fee to, descriptions of the event, and more.

Slots are given to alternates if registration fees are not received on time. The seven dollar ($7) registration fee from those who have been granted a slot must be postmarked by January 1, 2006. Contact Blair Lybbert at boyscouts@cvm.tamu.edu with any questions.

Tiger Cub advancement change

Effective immediately, the National Office is changing the Tiger Cub advancement requirements. Now, Tiger Cub Scouts must first earn the “Bobcat” rank, after joining a pack. The Tiger Cub badge will now follow Bobcat. However, Tiger Cubs will still earn the Tiger Cub Immediate Recognition Emblem prior to earning the Bobcat badge. Also, in a move to fully align Tiger Cubs with the rest of the Cub Scout program, they will now learn the Cub Scout motto rather than the Tiger Cub motto. While "Search, Discover, Share" is being phased out as the Tiger Cub motto, it will still be used as the basis for Tiger Cub den meetings. The new requirements should be reflected in the new Tiger Cub handbook.

Griffith League Hiking Trails Opening

Adventure awaits central Texas Scouts on miles of new hiking trails at the Capitol Area Council’s Griffith League Scout Ranch near Bastrop. More than ten miles of new trails will debut on September 13, on a property rich in natural beauty and Texas history. Two trails will make up the introductory trail system: an “easy” trail of less than five miles, and a more advanced trail covering about six miles. But those aren’t the only improvements being unveiled during the fall grand opening. There will be a new pavilion near the parking lot, as well as a new gateway to identify the Griffith League Scout Ranch. Future plans include side trails to better explore the Griffith property, as well as a mile-long extension of the water line to make drinking water more convenient for units.

Georgetown troop in Scouting Magazine

Troop 405’s commitment to community service is being highlighted as part of the November-December issue of Scouting Magazine, in a spotlight on the success of the Good Turn for America initiative. The Georgetown unit has supported the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, for the past nine years. The event raises money, celebrates survival and remembers victims of cancer. Nationally, more than 3.8 million hours of service have been recorded on the Good Turn for America website, www.goodturnforamerica.org, since it went online in 2004. To record your service hours on the Good Turn website, you’ll need your Good Turn for America ID and local unit number. If you don’t have that information, contact your District Executive.

Council announces "Keep Texas Fed": 2007 Scouting for Food

All of Central Texas will see the power of Scouting’s community service this spring, as the Capitol Area Council teams up with the Capital Area Food Bank for the “Keep Texas Fed” 2007 Scouting for Food drive.
The April 14 drive will involve Scouts and Scouting units over 15 counties, representing the entire council service area. It’s important to note that all food raised in a community will stay in that community. In other words, food collected in Bastrop will stay in Bastrop; Food collected in Hutto will stay in Hutto, etc. The Keep Texas Fed drive will be the largest volunteer food drive in Central Texas, benefiting thousands of families and children during a time of great need.
The committee for the Keep Texas Fed 2007 Scouting for Food drive is putting together the final details of the food drive plan, but here are some important dates to put on your calendar now: April 7 and April 14. April 7 is the day Scouts will distribute grocery bags to homes in their communities. April 14 is the day Scouts will return to those homes to collect bags full of food, and take them to a collection point for delivery to the local food pantry or community organization.
The Keep Texas Fed 2007 Scouting for Food drive was introduced during your district’s Program Planning Conference in August. By now, your district should have named a Food Drive Chairman. The Capitol Area Council is now seeking nominations for the Silver Beaver, Whitney M. Young Jr., and William H. Spurgeon III Awards. The nomination deadline is October 1, 2006. Completed nominations should be delivered or mailed (in a sealed envelope) to: Council Awards Committee, Capitol Area Council, BSA, 7540 Ed Bluestein Blvd., Austin, Texas, 78723. Nominations must be on an approved nomination form. You can find the forms at the council service center, or on the council’s website, http://bsacac.org/Forms/Index.asp (under the “Forms” section).

Why don't we sell popcorn over the internet?

Many people have asked in the past why the Capitol Area Council does not take part in the online popcorn sale offered by the popcorn vendor, Trails End. In short, the leadership of the council feels the online sale does not provide maximum benefit to your Scouts. Here are the reasons why:

1) Customers can’t just order one tin of popcorn on the orderpopcorn.com website – they have to order a full case; that’s a mouthful, literally.
2) Your unit earns 35% commission on Show-n-Sell or Take Order sales. With orders through orderpopcorn.com, units lose commission dollars because Trails End uses higher shipping costs for deliver of website orders (knocks off as much as 10% from the unit’s commission)
3) Any sales through the orderpopcorn.com website do not count as credit towards the Trails End scholarship program or prize program.
